Dentures in Georgia
From our Alpharetta office, we serve patients in Greater Atlanta, GA

You may not realize it but having good dental health affects your entire body. If you suffer from periodontal disease, tooth decay or injury, more than your mouth may be suffering. A great way to help resolve those issues may be replacing the ailing teeth with dentures.

There are two types of dentures commonly used. Complete dentures are designed when all teeth are removed. Partial dentures can cover the space where a few previously ailing teeth resided. Both types of dentures require Dr. Gurley to take measurements of your mouth and make a model for the dentures to be designed from. It is a very precise process in order for your dentures to fit the way they should.

Unlike dental implants , dentures are removable and require a bit more care. Naturally, you don't want to drop them since they are fairly delicate and can break. Just like your natural teeth, dentures must be brushed daily to remove food and plaque. Using a soft-bristle brush is recommended. Between brushings, it is best to rinse dentures after meals. In addition to caring for the dentures, you also need to brush your mouth, tongue and gums every day with a soft-bristle brush. This will remove bacteria and food particles that might otherwise be captured between the gums and dentures and could cause bad breath or decay. Finally, dentures should be removed at night.

Current dental technology allows Dr. Gurley to provide you comfortable and functional dentures while restoring your beautiful smile. The process begins with a determination of which damaged teeth need to be removed. While your mouth heals from this procedure, Dr. Gurley may provide a temporary denture for aesthetic purposes. Then, after the gum tissue has healed, Dr. Gurley will begin the process of taking bite molds. Once your dentures have been designed, based on the molds taken, the dentures will be fine tuned to fit your mouth and bite. If the denture is for just a few teeth, it may be necessary to make small grooves in the surrounding teeth so side brackets can fit snugly and keep the teeth in place. For full dentures, special denture fixative should not be necessary as the denture is so well fitted.

It does take some time for your mouth and tongue to get used to having dentures, but over time the mouth muscles will relax and become accustomed to your new teeth. Be sure to continue your regular dental visits, though. Your dentures need to be cared for just like your natural teeth.
