Tooth Crowns and Bridges in Georgia
Serving Atlanta, Alpharetta, & Marietta, GA

Tooth Crowns
Dental crowns are aptly named. They sit "on top" of a broken, chipped or discolored tooth returning it to its natural shape and size. Dental crowns can also be used to cover teeth with large fillings and not much tooth left. In addition to improving the look of the tooth, a dental crown also adds stability to help prevent further decay or breakage. While dental crowns can be gold or stainless steel, most people choose porcelain crowns so they are indistinguishable from their natural teeth.

Naturally, Dr. Gurley wants to help you have a gorgeous smile. Once he has had the chance to examine your teeth, he may determine that a dental crown is more appropriate. If that is the case, here's what you can expect.

Since the teeth crown will be installed over the offending tooth, the area may need to be cleaned up by removing small pieces. Next, a mold is made of the area and a temporary crown is provided while the permanent dental crown is being designed. In approximately two weeks, when the new tooth crown is ready, it will be cemented to the offending tooth permanently. This step may take a couple of office visits depending on how much filling must be done to bridge the gap between the top of the bad tooth and the surrounding dental crown.

However, once it is properly fit and attached, your dental tooth crown can last up to fifteen years. From this point on, your new dental crown needs no special attention. Just brush and floss regularly.

Dental Bridges
Dental bridges are also well named. They "bridge" the gaps that are left when one or more teeth have been pulled due to decay or damage. Dental bridges help return your bite and the process of chewing to normal.

Should Dr. Gurley determine a dental bridge implant is the best option for you, it is attached directly to the jawbone under the gum line.

The process for dental bridges is somewhat similar to dental crowns . Dr. Gurley prepares the teeth on either side of the space so they can make room for the dental bridge. In some cases, fillings may need to be redone or sides of the teeth may need to be slightly reshaped. Next, an impression of the area will be taken and this will be the model for the dental bridge design. If appropriate, Dr. Gurley may provide a temporary bridge for you to wear for aesthetic purposes during the couple of weeks while your permanent dental bridge is being designed.

The next step will be to remove the temporary dental bridge and, with careful fitting, install the permanent dental bridge. Once your bite and teeth alignment are correct, the bridge will be cemented in place. With continued good oral hygiene, your dental bridge will last a very long time.

Partial Bridges
In some cases, Dr. Gurley may recommend a partial dental bridge, which is removable. A partial dental bridge is primarily used when there are multiples missing teeth in the front or back of the mouth, where large gaps need to be protected.

When fitting you for a partial dental bridge, the procedures are followed as with a permanent dental bridge (see above). Before any form of dental bridge is prescribed, however, Dr. Gurley will review your specific case in detail to be sure you get the best solution for your dental problem.
